G4 - Reducing Fear to Build Healthy Families: Meeting the Needs of People with Substance Use Disorder (CE Offered)

This session will present tools for addressing stigma, intimate partner violence, and child welfare reporting – issues faced by those with opioid and other substance use disorders (OUD/SUD) who are also pregnant, post-partum and parenting. Effective treatment exist but these issues serve as barriers by instilling fear in potential patients and require creating safe spaces through training, cross-sector partners, and systems change. Don’t Quit the Quit trains doulas and WIC staff; Doing Right by Birth trains hospital staff to reduce unnecessary child welfare reporting and a third program is implementing clinic changes to address intimate partner violence and substance use coercion. Spreading these efforts will contribute to reducing maternal OUD/SUD mortality and family separation.
